West Cambridge, Sought-after by Families and the Wealthiest.
Extending from Harvard Square all the way to Fresh Pond, West Cambridge is a sprawling area with large, historic homes such as the Longfellow House, one of George Washington’s headquarters during the Revolutionary War but also the mansion-like homes located on Appleton Street or Lakeview Street. It is bounded by the Charles River on the south, JFK Street on the east, Concord Avenue on the north, and Fresh Pond, Aberdeen Avenue, and the Watertown line on the west. It is an attractive neighborhood for families with tree-lined streets and many open spaces.
Within its vicinity, you will find different areas:
- The Larchwood area, the southernmost portion of Neighborhood Nine, above Cambridge Common, West Cambridge and Harvard Square and to the west of the Agassiz neighborhood. Designed as a residential subdivision in 1915, its winding streets, lined with handsome houses and lush landscaping, are tucked between Brattle Street, Huron Avenue, and Fresh Pond Parkway. The predominant architectural style in the Larchwood neighborhood is Georgian Revival. There are Capes, Gambrels, and Tudor Revivals in the neighborhood. The Larchwood area is within walk to Fresh Pond Reservoir and Cambridge Public Golf course.
- Huron Village, east of Fresh Pond. While most houses were built in the early 19th century, the neighborhood is furnished with a few modern houses.
- Fresh Pond is the neighborhood of the Fresh Pond Reservoir below Alewife and overlapping with Cambridge Highlands toward the north, Strawberry Hill toward the south and Neighborhood 10 (also known, confusingly, as West Cambridge) toward the east. (And the town of Belmont to the west.)
- Brattle Square is part of Harvard Square to the west, at the complex intersection of Brattle and Mount Auburn streets just above Eliot Square
- Brattle Street is Tory Row, and vice versa, and they’re both an area of large, beautiful and historic homes to the west of Harvard Square in West Cambridge.
- Coolidge Hill is a ritzy area between Mount Auburn Cemetery and the Charles River in West Cambridge.
- Strawberry Hill is a small area that starts mid-Fresh Pond Reservoir and Thomas P. O’Neill Municipal Golf Course and extends south to the borders of Belmont and Watertown, going only as far east as the train tracks.
